Project 3: Retractable Table

Last friday was another extreme hectic day... ha ha ha and i did it in studio for the first time... Sorry Studio Master.. Gomenasai.. and i feel doing in studio much better as you said in the lecture hall before... ;)) ...so i try to explain the process ok...

Photo 1: 1st time in Studio designing... good feeling.

Project Brief
For this project, each of us has to come with an ideal retractable table completed with chair/ stool which used for drafting (according to the project brief - from what i understood) in the dimension of not more that (1000mm x 650mm x 1800m (length x width x height) dimension which fit A1 Paper size [841mm x 594mm - (length x width)]). It should be functioning (LOGIC - my friend Lucas said that), appealing (curvilinear not the conventional one) and PORTABLE which u can bring home... (My home is far away in Sabah not only hostel here in Penang... and for other who like to travel by air....) which lead me to second stage of :

Design Process
So, first thing came in my mind was an airplane cabin-sized luggage, and to be strict regionally, i put the one that Air Asia put in their policy. there are quite loose sometimes but its okay. Internationally the size of the luggage much bigger as i did little research on wikipedia instead of googling directly from the operating company instead.

Photo 2 : Research materials (inspiration)

I got the facts and ready for the next, which is modifying this planar objects to something that can be used to draft. Easy? ... no easy one... hahaha... the concept is same with a company which produce this thing in Japan... everybody knows Capsule Corp right? U guys can google to read their profile hahaha... give you guys the link - http://dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/Capsule_Corporation-. the really cool thing about this company is that, Dr. Brief, Trunks grandpa has patented a technology which really ease the human kind. A tiny capsule can store everything and with a simple push button, then you'll served with some sort of fogs... Tadaaa.. anything u like you name it, car, house and etc. This all just imaginative but we are progressing there with the advance research in field like nanotechnology, physics, matter-related subject we'll be there someday in the future. HA HA HA.... what sort of crap did i tell to you guys...?

Drafting Process
So moving on from my inspiration, i tried to come as required by the brief... it's hard process... u can do all organic as you want, BUT ... as for me it was logically failed! Maybe it was my bad, fault and lack of experience. I spent so many days on working on my design because i never design a furniture before. And i still thinking how to make it functioning until the day of submission wa wa wa...

Photo 4 & 5 : Sketches which never finish...

Output
So sayang, we don't do modelling. So our final output was 6 pages of drawing together with description.

Page 1: 3D Overall Perspective View (no scale)

Page 2: Design Concept (including concept, singularity, potential use & market appeal)

HUrmm.... what to comment? ... i can't elaborate further. First, couldn't finalize design so for me, the description should tally for thing you want to design/ sell. So, what i can really say about this is... this type of design is easily manufactured and the target would be especially the student of design based and engineering/ technical background. it is really portable. and u don't have to paste "FRAGILE" sticker as you can bring to safely secured in cabin rather than cargo... (everybody knows how they handle cargo stuffs rite.... even though FRAGILE was posted.... hahahahaha not to mention which airlines do so).....

Besides drafting table, it can be used as other purposes such as study table, or even dinner table as the legs is adjustable. U guys see Korean drama right... lets not go far, sick patient in hospital can also use this table when they eat on their bed.

Page 3: Top View & Elevation from all 4 sides

I used girl as archi human figure because i use boy at the first page. So i put no gender discrimination in my drawings. :)

Page 4: Axonometric Drawing

Sadly... i only managed to color this one and i still improving my technique and how to actually matching pairs or varieties of colors in a design. I saw some of my friends work, there are really good to put things together and the output... beautiful art.

Basically, this table is consisted of 4 small unit of table ( 450mm x 300mm x 20mm), each equipped with its own leg (700mm) which is adjustable to any height. When combine together you will get a proper sketching table and these four planes be assembled by simple door locking system. As my design process was not finished, i am actually plan to produce 4 sets of small table but look like box, and the legs are kept inside the box. So it look much tidier than what i have produced. Once working done, each tables than be folded and kept together onto one plane which will act as base/ platform which equipped with wheel and holding stick. That part was missing and incomplete......... i will improve the design and present you guys the final product.

Page 5 & 6: Free hand non-scaled sketch any other 3D Views and Technical Details

These two last pages actually important because this is the pages explaining the on how your design is going to work. How it is going to be made and what sort of materials will be used to produce as you imagine. For my design, my main material would be timber and steel.

As you can see from the sketch and drawings, the table top and stool seatings will be using timber. the reason is timber, for me mainly because of the comfort provide by timber. It it not to cold as timber has a just matter temperature compare to steel. You can do your work everywhere without getting cold/ too hot like stee. I just use steel as the main material for the legs for both furniture because steel provide good strength and elasticity compare to other material. Plus steel is much lighter than woods make it as buffer to balance the timber mass, which actually put into design criteria as my main inspiration is the allowable luggage inside cabin.

thanks for reading.... Waiting for Project 4 soon.

End of text.

Project 2: Natural & Man-Made Form

Here it comes the second assignment. Our task was to draw one natural form and one man-made form on grid. Subjects from each categories has to be printed and scale was put onto it. then it is our job to copy the subjects accordingly to the medium. sounds easy huh?...

i think i got things went wrong for this assignment. i didn't do well because it was last minute, and it is partially my mistake because i didn't manage my time very well. We had our own compulsory university camp to attend on the weekend after the assignment announced, then our geodesic dome's day which spent almost my time, resources and energy, finally got exhausted and produced something which i consider disaster! (T.T)...

2A: Natural Form

For the first drawing, it was hard for me to decide which natural form would be my subject. i snapped on cats, birds, plants and etc but finally dragon fly was chosen as my subject. biologically it is considered insect. i found this species wandering and flying around the USM lake. then the "aha!" moment came. i picked this insect because of the relationship between this species to their environment.

i found the group of dragon flies around the lake because water is the main medium for them to reproduce. they will lay their eggs in the water and the early larval life of this species was spent inside aquatic environment, then metamorphosis before turning to adult. Dragon fly depends  on water very much as human do.

What really made me attracted to this organism was the similarity of it with human. Human and water inseparable. Human is very much depending on water for everything they do in life... not to mention here as that is general knowledge and logic haha... same as this dragon fly.

Without water, we couldn't expect our life would be easy. there for it is important for us to take care of our own natural resources. without water, there is no life. We may not be able to enjoy this unique tiny flying organism at backyard of our home, environment which really gives the sense of tranquility and calmness.

2B: Man Made Form

For this 2B drawing, each of us the members of studio was asked to draw a facade of a single or double storey building which can be found in Queensbay, Bayan Lepas or Bukit Jambul area. For me, i picked a bungalow in Bukit Jambul area.

I got my eyes fixed to this house because of the overall design itself. Yes i can consider it has plane facade but the combination all design elements made the house stand out among the others. What i like most is the simplicity of the design harmonize with the details structures of the fence and two enormous, tall tree which located at each side of the house.

so here it is my building facade drawing...

2B: Man Made Form

Honestly i don't really proud to this drawing... (T.T)... first of all... it was last minute... second one the coloring was immature i would say... i came with a nice drawing, but when it comes to color..... hahahaha i completely screw it up.. yet the good thing i know where to improve especially coloring technique.

alright that's all.

our next project would be design a furniture... wish me luck!

thanks for reading :-))
